Exoplanet Guide

Description

Exoplanet Guide is probably the most complete exoplanet data reference for phones. It is based on Jean Schneider's Exoplanet Encyclopedia supplemented by the database of the Penn State University. Planets for which suffcient data is not currently available are filtered out, but may show up with future database updates. The database can be updated online.

One of the key features is the graphical representation of the habitable zone of a parent star. Exoplanet Guide comes with a fully featured star chart plotting stars down to magnitude 6.4 plus all Messier objects!

Export all exoplanets with illustrations to KML format for use with Google Sky (part of Google Earth for the desktop) and explore with the convenience of a larger screen.

The Kepler Field of View overlay changes automatically with Kepler's seasonal rotation (subtle changes, though).

Description

Solunar is software for Android phones which computes astronomical times as well as physical and ephemeris data for the sun and the moon in realtime or for a selected date at midnight. Rise, set and transit times are believed to be ±1 minute accurate for moderate latitudes.

Solunar is accompanied by a large 2x4 home screen widget which has rise and set times plus ephemeris for the sun and the moon at a glance. The widget is also capable of incrementing and decrementing in 1-day-intervals.

The application is hoped to be useful for hobbiest, such as stargazers, fishermen, gardeners, plant growers, historians, hikers, photographers, sailors, campers, golfers, nature lovers and vampires.

Description

Martian Time is a time keeper for time on the planet Mars designed for those who wish to monitor time at specific landmarks, such as Olympus Mons or Mars rover sites.

Martian time does not only compute the major martian time definitions but also provides Solar and Terran longitudes, latitudes, hour angles, azimuths and altitudes, etc, for selected landmarks as if observed on Mars.

In addition, a full set of Mars ephemerides with reference to Earth is computed for real-time. Select one from 12 available surface map textures for the rotatable Mars globe and popular landmarks from a list of approximately 50 locations, including rover sites.

Martian Time is based on the algorithm employed for Mars24, a Java applet developed by NASA/GISS and is therefore believed to be highly accurate provided your phone's time and timezone are set correctly.

Scope Companion

Description

Scope Companion is software for computing performance parameters of optical equipment for astronomy, primarily designed for telescope novices and first-time buyers of optical systems.

Upon input of basic specifications, such as aperture and focal length, Scope Companion calculates the ideal performance of the optics and plots a performance graph. Performance data can also be calculated for binoculars.

The imaging section calculates the field of view with a given CCD camera and lens/scope configuration. The data can be visually confirmed by means of a simulation against the surface of the moon.

Additional helper functions include a star transit counter for measuring the field of view of an eyepiece, a dew point estimator, a compass and an image orientation simulator.

Sky Atlas

Description

Sky Atlas is a not planetarium software but a static atlas for the purpose of looking up celestial objects other than the solar system's. It plots all stars visible to the unaided eye under best terrestial observation conditions and contains the complete Messier catalog including images. Other deepsky object images are planned for future versions, subject to demand. The chart can be viewed in three modes, day, monochrome and night view. A chart refresh with all drawing options activated requires about 2 seconds as tested with a 1GHz CPU phone (Sharp IS03).

Description

Planisphere displays the local sky in realtime, sun/moon rise and set times plus the current phase of the Moon. It is basically a clock of the sky.

The sky view is updated every 4 minutes which is roughly equivalent to a sky motion of 1 degree.

Description

Galilean is software to help plan and assist observations of the major four jovian satellites, also called the Galilean Moons.

Meteorites and artificial satellites excepted, nothing moves faster in the eyepiece than Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. For this reason, these brightest moons of Jupiter are most popular and easy targets for binoculars and telescopes alike.

Galilean plots current and time-shifted positions of the moons, both as on-north orbit view and edge-on, while the latter can be tilted to Jupiter's rotation axis or parallactic angle, if Jupiter is above horizon.

Galilean also computes detailed physical and positional ephemerides for Jupiter and the moons, as well as countdown for the transit of the GRS.

Saturnian

Description

Saturnian is software to help plan and assist observations of the major saturnian satellites.

Saturnian plots current and time-shifted positions of the moons, both as on-north orbit view and edge-on, while the latter can be tilted to Saturn's rotation axis (geocentric) or parallactic angle (topcentric), if Saturn is above horizon. Transiting moons and their shadows are plotted on an enlarged view of the planet.

Saturnian also computes detailed physical and positional ephemerides for Saturn and its moons. Furthermore, a chart is provided showing Saturn's elongation from the Sun.

Sky Scanner

Description

Sky Scanner employs the phone camera with a view finder grid overlay and integrated compass. As you move the phone along the sky, the application computes a set of celestial coordinates, i.e., horizontal, equatorial, ecliptical and galactical in addition to local sidereal time and local time.

Azimuth and altitude are computed for the sun and the moon, plus all solar system planets. The moon is shown in its current phase and parallactic (diurnal) angle.

Any view can be frozen by pushing the camera shutter button and released by pushing the shutter again. Sky Scanner operates in landscape mode to provide a widest possible field of view.

Magnetic Field Scanner

Description

This application is considered a fun application and must not be used in critical situations.

There is a number of so-called Metal Detectors out there in the market. This is often irritating since the phone's magnetic sensor reacts on magnetism rather than on metals. Some metals, however, carry a magnetic field, such as a pair of scissors or a screw driver. Gold and silver do not assume magnetism in that an application like this is not capable of detecting treasures.

However, the Android magnetic sensor, if incorporated, is well capable of detecting objects, such as loudspeakers, cell phones, refridgerators and anything that contains magnetism.

Not all Android phones and tablets employ the same magnetic hardware sensor, in that sensitivity and accuracy may vary by manufacturer. Some devices do not provide a magnetic sensor at all.

The application computes the total magnetic field, TMF, magnitude from rectangular XYZ components by squaring:
TMF = √X² + Y² + Z² [µTesla]

A few field tests resulted in positive detection of magnetized objects, such as pipes, drum cans, scoops, fences, etc. However, what is the purpose of scanning objects that can be seen and touched? A real-world test should involve detection of objects buried underground or in a wall.

Anyway, please try it yourself. If it won't work for you it will at least guide you to the location of the magnetic sensor in your phone - if it has one.

Description

Here is a simple but efficient product database for electronic devices. This is not an existing project, neither sold nor in use, but for demonstration purposes only.

Three basic modes for searching products are provided, query by manufacturer, by application or manual input. Upon tap on a product, the user can download PDF data sheets or send an email request if not currently posted online.

The list of manufacturers allows access to contact data and time zone information for the salesman to check overseas office hours.

The core database is of a standard format which allows in-house maintenance by the client. Distribution of database updates is facilitated by means of download from the corporate server.

Software development is illfamed for proud development costs, however, this must not always be the case.
